Michael David Dixon was born in the City of Westminster in London, England on July 14th, 1937 to Katherine and Joseph Dixon. He spent his early life in south London. He attended Battersea Grammar School and then Chelsea School of Pharmacy, University of London. After graduating with honors, he joined the college faculty and spent a year studying at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana.
In 1964 Michael left academia and joined a scientific abstracting and indexing company in London. He eventually became their director of sales which necessitated world-wide travel. It was on one of these journeys that Michael met Carolyn who was a stewardess for BOAC. They married in East Hampstead, England on October 8th, 1971.
Together, Carolyn and Michael had two sons, Martin and Alex. While working full-time and with a young family, Michael completed his PhD in Information Science from University College London. When the opportunity arose for Michael to head the company's US subsidiary, he moved to Potomac, Maryland in 1983 with the family following shortly afterwards.
Michael’s life-long passions were his family, ice hockey and philately (stamp collecting). He earned innumerable distinctions in the philatelic world with awards from many international exhibitions. Michael was an active member of the philatelic community serving in key roles for the Royal Philatelic Society of London and the American Philatelic Society. One of his prized accomplishments was running the 2006 Washington DC International Stamp show with thousands of attendees and exhibitors.
Michael eventually transitioned careers and started consulting work for the US government. He was proud to help his adopted nation with his work for the National Counter Terrorism Center and other intelligence agencies. When Michael retired from the workforce, Carolyn and he moved out West to join Martin and his family in Portland, Oregon.
Michael passed on March 9th, 2024 in Portland. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carolyn, his sister Gina Monty, his sons Martin and Alex, and his grandchildren Chloe, Abigail, William, Audrey and Anya. Michael was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Kate.
